3 shirts + 4 skirts is not the same as 5 shirts + 2 skirts.

That doesn't mean that 3+4 is not the same as 5 + 7

If someone asks for 3 shirts, and someone else asks for 4 shirts, but all you've got in stock is a pack of 5 shirts and two shirts from an open pack, that's all the shirts you need, because fetching (3 + 4) shirts is the same as fetching (5 + 2) shirts.

An equally bad BBC headline a couple of days ago was “Schoolgirl rapist shot in attack”:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_ireland/foyle_and_west/7973598.stm

A “schoolgirl chess champion” would be a schoolgirl who was a chess champion, but of course in this instance, the schoolgirl was, sadly, the victim.

You wrote: "(We’re certainly not going to force her out of it.)"

My son, at about age 4, put on his "jamamas" to go to bed.

I nearly clocked DH when he corrected him. They grow out of those things so fast.

(Some stick, though--my entire family still calls them "underbrellas," the way my sister did)

Hilarious. This reminds me of something I once read about Eugène Ionesco. He is supposed to have found the inspiration for writing his absurdist plays by coming across similar language instruction manuals. Somebody should turn the idea on its head, and make *intentionally* absurd Assimil books...

I agree with Chris's comment. I think critiques of Ayoun's study are only valid when based on the actual work rather than a blogged retelling of the paper. I attended Ayoun's talk, and it seemed rigorous and well researched to me. Heidi's retelling is pretty accurate, but it goes without saying that it is not the original work and leaves out many details.
