Infant-school synecdoche

My daughter’s school newsletter contains the following item:

“Sandwiches.
“If your child brings sandwiches, please ensure that there are no sweets in there.”

“Sandwiches” = “packed lunch”, I presume.

Oliver James on Bookclub

I turned on the car radio at the start of this month’s show but I couldn’t stomach more than five minutes of it. It started badly with James Naughtie saying  the book “was published in 2007, it’s called “Affluenza”, a word that has quickly found its way into the language” as though Oliver James had coined the term, and went downhill from there. I’m not surprised to find that the book only rates 2.5 stars on Amazon.

Sounds like a case for Bad Science.
